Detroit, MI, United States (4E) – Will you dare drive a automotive with out a steering wheel? GM is betting you’ll and plans to market its revolutionary all-electric — and driverless — Cruise AV in 2019.

Cruise AV (Autonomous Vehicle) is the fully driverless model of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, a front-engine; five-door all-electric subcompact hatchback marketed by GM and produced beginning in October 2016. The Bolt was named the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year; the 2017 North American Car of the Year and an Automobile Magazine 2017 All Star.

GM describes Cruise AV as “the first production-ready vehicle built from the start to operate safely on its own, with no driver, steering wheel, pedals or manual controls.”

Unlike the Bolt, Cruise AV has no controls by any means, not even buttons. Cruise AV was designed to deal with you as a passenger, irrespective of the place you sit.

The drawback with Cruise AV is whether or not it may meet the Federal Motor Vehicle’s security requirements. GM President Dan Ammann mentioned his firm is not on the lookout for an exemption. Instead, it desires to “meet that standard in a different kind of way.”

“What we can do is put the equivalent of the passenger side airbag on that side as well,” mentioned Ammann.

“So it’s to meet the standards but meet them in a way that’s different than what’s exactly prescribed, and that’s what the petition seeks to get approval for.”

Various automakers and transportation firms banded collectively final 12 months to name for a change to these guidelines.

The Department of Transportation has to grant GM’s newest Safety Petition for the automaker to deploy the autonomous Cruise AV in 2019. GM has filed a Safety Petition with the division to do exactly that. A choice is pending.

Cruise AV was developed by GM Cruise LLC primarily based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2013, by Kyle Vogt and Daniel Kan, Cruise assessments and develops autonomous automotive know-how. The firm is a subsidiary of GM.
